Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 is part of the Primary School at The International School @ ParkCity Hanoi. It caters for students aged 5 to 7 years old and is a vital link between our Early Years Center and the Key Stage 2 classes. Our warm and engaging learning atmosphere helps students flourish both academically and socially, as they experience the full range of specialist lessons on offer at ISPH.
We deliver a bespoke curriculum that is adapted to suit the needs and abilities of all students. Through comprehensive assessment and feedback to students, we ensure strong progress is made across the curriculum for all our students.
Curriculum
Students in Key Stage 1 follow the English National Curriculum for England, enhanced by the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The English and Mathematics frameworks in the National Curriculum:
- The English Framework has three main elements: reading, writing and oracy (speaking & listening).
- The Mathematics framework focuses on core arithmetic knowledge. It also develops problem-solving skills through learning: sorting; ordering; grouping; measuring; calculating; comparing, manipulating, organising and interpreting information.
The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) focuses on three main aims to support learning and teaching:
- To help children learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become better aware of the world around them.
- To help children develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives.
- To help children develop an international mindset alongside an awareness of their own nationality.
Daily Mathematics and English lessons ensure full coverage of the English National Curriculum. All subjects are set within the context of the IPC, wherever possible. The following subject areas are specifically covered within the IPC themes:
The following subject areas are taught by specialist teachers and are linked to IPC themes where possible:
Our teaching strategies are personalised to address the needs of the students; they are empowered to work both independently and collaboratively. The emphasis in Year 1 and Year 2 is on active learning. Children are taught subject skills, knowledge and understanding through hands-on, practical experiences linked to real-life learning. Helping students grow in confidence to inquire, actively seek information, plan and design ways to help themselves, and others, learn.
We also place a great focus on wellbeing and use our COALS lessons to teach and guide students through three important areas of their development and understanding:
- Relationships
- Health and Wellbeing
- Living in the wider world
